A bank open to the city

This relocation plan for the Tokyo branch of Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), an Indonesian state-owned bank, called for a location that would serve as a store, national showroom, and a social gathering place for investors. The design team aimed to create “a bank open to the city" that appeals to Tokyo pedestrians and to Indonesian culture. The ceiling is louvered to give a sense of depth to the design’s two spaces -- the teller window and the reception room for business meetings -- and to create a visual effect that draws in people. Public functions such as the showcase, lounge, and bank waiting area are loosely connected. From the street, visitors can view the indoor activities and art. The bank was thus transformed into a "public space" that allows anyone to become familiar with Indonesian culture.
