The 400-seat arena-type hall is focused on chamber music. Encas the hall with solid wood membersHyogo Performing Arts CenterThis center for the performing arts was built as a symbol ofemotional recovery and cultural revival ten years after the GreatHanshin Earthquake. The interiors of the small and large hallsuse mahogany paneling, while the middle hall uses cedarpaneling produced locally in Hyogo prefecture. The designs ofthe halls express the different characters of those trees. We tried to make the spaces of the building simple in bothplan and section. The toplights, courtyard and piazza areeffective in bringing natural light in to every part of the building’sinterior. Besides saving energy, we intended the natural light todraw out the character of the materials used in the building.Timber is a renewable natural resource that places littleburden on the environment. After the trees are felled, new onesare planted, and in 30̃50 years they are again available for useas a source of materials or energy. Timber is a material that canbe employed as a permanently sustainable resource.
