Our design for the project aimed to create townscapes rich in diverse types of space and varieties of layout that would make it possible for the individual people working there to pursue their endeavors without feeling overwhelmed by the huge enterprise they work for. The 12 town-like clusters of buildings are all distinctive, together creating a vast research community scattered over an undulating topography of lakeside greenery and water.Designing for Timeless AppealAs we faced the task in this plan of creating attractive townscapes, we returned to the fundamental idea in design that we have much to humbly learn from classical styles. Modern cities are places of chaos and clamor, but the historical perspective of the whole world offers many distinctive and alluring townscapes that continue to attract people around the world while also accommodating the lifestyles of our own time. In the spirit of the seventeenth-century poet Matsuo Basho, who said “Seek not the paths of the ancients; seek that which the ancients sought,” we studied the appeal of the historical townscapes our predecessors created and tried to recreate the qualities of that appeal within the context of today. We first selected 12 historic cities in Europe where the old townscapes are best preserved. Design teams responsible for each Huawei R&D townscape spent time residing in the original city to thoroughly grasp its features, and while obtaining advice from specialists on the historical architecture of each city, surveyed its facades and piazzas, examined local materials, and held discussions about how the appeal of that particular townscape could be recreated. We heard specialists on the historical preservation of the Versailles Palace talk about the “manners” of historical architecture and in Granada we discussed with local conservation architects how the Alhambra Palace could be handled to make the most of its architecture in the contemporary age. Through these and other such experiences we were able to get a firm sense of the harmonies that make for a beautiful townscape, behind which lie the rich individuality of specific buildings, the careful and skillful use of materials and colors, and the “dialogue” among buildings that has been cultivated throughout history.
