SPOTLIGHT2015年7月、四国・愛媛県のJR新にいはま居浜駅前に「あかがねミュージアム（新居浜市総合文化施設・美術館）」が開館しました。建設に至るまで実に40年の歴史を刻み、新居浜市の行政と市民の熱い思いが結晶した、わが国でも注目すべき施設です。核となる美術館をはじめ、250席の多目的ホール、新居浜の祭事として知られる太鼓台の実物展示を行う「太鼓台ミュージアム」と360度シアター、さらに創作工房や屋内外のステージなどを擁し、美術、音楽、演劇など、さまざまの表現活動を発信する、まったく新しいスタイルのミュージアムの誕生といっても過言ではありません。　そして注目すべきは、建築そのものが、別子銅山の開坑以来、新居浜を象徴する「銅」で覆われたユニークな姿を呈していることでしょう。まさに「住友の聖地・新居浜」※に呼応するその圧倒的な空間性は、新しいミュージアムの出現を予感させます。時の経過とともに表情を変える「銅」で造形された外観は、鉄とガラスで支配された均質で無機的なモダン建築とは一線を画し、新たな表現を求める芸術紹介の場にふさわしい発言力を秘めているようです。※ 新居浜は、住友家による別子銅山の開坑と、それに関連した系列企業の発祥の地として知られ、「聖地」と称される。住友の聖地・新居浜に誕生した、銅で覆われた新ミュージアム｜山野英嗣｜新居浜市美術館長A New Museum Clad in Copper Rises From Sumitomo’s Hallowed Ground in NiihamaHidetsugu Yamano | Director, Niihama City Museum of Artクライアントに聞くClient CommentIn July 2015, the Akagane Museum (Niihama City Museum and Niihama City Museum of Art) opened in front of JR Niihama Station in Ehime Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. Embodying the passions of both city officials and the citizens of Niihama over a history of four decades, it is an edifice worthy of national attention. With an art museum at its core, it incorporates a multi-purpose 250-seat auditorium, the Taiko-dai Museum (housing the large floats used in an annual Niihama festival), a 360-degree theater, an arts studio, and both indoor and outdoor stages. Promoting not only the fine arts, but music, theater, and other forms of artistic expression, the Akagane Museum represents a new style in the vanguard of museums today.The building’s copper exterior projects a striking statement in the Niihama landscape, known as the cradle of the Sumitomo family business that started there with copper production in the Besshi mines in the late seventeenth century. The vast spatiality of the design symbolizes the city as the “native home of the Sumitomo Group” and hails the birth of a new type of museum. As distinct from the inorganic and homogeneous iron and glass that dominate most modern buildings, copper is a material that changes in appearance with the passage of time.
