A Hall that Grows with TimeFor a public facility to be used and loved for a long time, it has to remain continuously important to users, but particularly in the case of a grand hall, it also has to be an out-of-the-ordinary, special place. To achieve that, our approach was to evoke a story emerging out of carefully selected materials.Using 100 percent locally grown Japanese cedar from Osaka prefecture, we aimed for a musical-instrument-like hall that marks the passage of time. In order to achieve balanced sound from wherever seated, the walls feature timbers dynamically stacked with random-looking protrusions, carefully arranged to improve the overall acoustics of the hall, and appearing like keys being played on the walls. Timber members are substantial in size, expressing longevity and enveloping the audience with the sense of warmth and strength only offered by a natural material. The design approach achieves a hall that will long support local citizens and earn a firm place in their affections. As local cultural and artistic activities grow and mature while using the hall, so too will its resonance within the community. 1: The grand hall. The design is conceived as a kind of layered “instrument” of locally grown cedar.2: Warmth and strength are the hallmarks of the acoustic design for the walls of the grand hall.
