ヒューマンスケールで構成する親密な交流の場高度な芸術活動から日常生活の延長にある所作まで、幅広いレベルの活動を許容する「包容力」を空間にもたせることをまず考えました。　鉄筋コンクリート組積造（RM造）を採用し、5万個のブロックを手作業で積み上げた空間は、訪れた人に「永続性」を感じさせ、「安心感」を与えます。好きな個所に耐荷重50kgの展示ピンをセットできるので、すべてのコンクリートブロック壁面が市民にとっての自由なキャンバスになります。　また、子どもから高齢者まで多くの世代が気軽に集い・佇み・交流できるように住宅スケールとしました。軒高を約6mに抑えることで、旧来の公共建築に見られる威風を排除し、親しみやすい表情で人びとを迎え入れます。同時に階高を約3mで構成することで、内部に入ってすぐに2階ギャラリーの作品や会議室での催しが手に取るように感じられます。外部から内部へと途切れることなく多様なアクティビティが連続し、いつの間にか建物の奥へ奥へと引き込まれるような効果をもたらします。　ヒューマンスケールの空間にさまざまな活動が内包されることで、親密さが醸成され、出会いと交流の機会が増大することを意図しました。Human-Scale Places Built for Intimate Interaction Our first idea was to create spaces with the capacity to support a wide range of activities from highbrow art to events that are extensions of everyday life. The reinforced masonry structure comprising of some 50,000 blocks all set by hand, dynamically defines space while providing visitors with a sense of permanence and safety. All the concrete block wall surfaces can accommodate exhibition pins in any desired location, capable of supporting loads of 50kg, transforming them into flexible canvases for citizens.The building was kept at residential-zone scale, making it amenable to gathering, lingering, and interaction among people of all ages. Instead of the imposing proportions so common in public buildings, the eaves are set at a low 6 meters for a friendly and welcoming facade. By keeping the floor height at 3 meters, exhibits and events in the second-floor gallery and conference room are made immediately perceptible from the entrance. Continuous glimpses of the diverse activities going on within have the effect of drawing the visitor deeper inside the building.The sense of expectation triggered by such glimpses attracts people, augmenting the density of use and increasing opportunities for encounter and exchange.1062017 Summer31WORKSFeature | A Hall Open to the City and Its Inhabitants
