（1898─1941）の「生命は機械ではなく、流れだ」という言葉を思い出しました。　シェーンハイマーは、食べ物が単にエネルギー源を摂取するためのものではなく、体の一部に成りかわっていくこと、そして、体を形づくっている原子や分子が分解され捨てられていることを発見した人です。生命を流れと捉え「Dynamic State」（動的な状態にある）と言っています。私はこれを、流れているけれども、つねに合成と分解の中でバランスをとり直しているとして「動的平衡」と訳しています。生命は、大きく変わってしまわないために、小さく変わり続けている。だから、環境に対して柔軟で、病気になれば回復するのです。　動的平衡のリベンジの話をします。花粉症に処方される抗ヒスタミン剤は、偽ヒスタミンとして、細胞にあるレセプターを占拠することで症状を抑えます。しかし使い続けると、生命は、体に入ってくる花粉を受け止めるために、新たなヒスタミンとレセプターをつくり出し、より花粉に過敏な体質をつくり出してしまう可能性があります。そこには、生命を機械と捉え、動的な傾向を見失ってしまうことへの警告、教訓があるわけです。─再びフェルメールと出会う最後に、余興ですがフェルメールの話をします。フェルメールが顕微鏡の父・レーウェンフックと同時代、同じ街にいたという話をしましたが、私は、そのことをすっかり忘れていました。　ところがニューヨークで過ごしたポスト・ドクター時代、ふと迷い込んだフリック・コレクション美術館でフェルメールに再会したのです。　私は、フェルメールの絵に表れている科学者的なマインドに共感を覚え、37作品しか残っていないということが私のオタク心に火をつけました。この37という数字は逆から読んでも73で素数なのです。そして私はすべてのフェルメールを見ようと決意し、約20年かけて世界中を巡礼しました。　すべて見てしまうと、今度は37作品を一挙に見られる夢のテーマパークとして、コンピュータや特殊プリンターを使いフェルメールの絵を再現した、フェルメール・リ・クリエイト展という偽物展をつくってしまいました。　今では、フェルメールオタクぶりが世界に知れ渡り、「真珠の耳飾りの少女」を所蔵するオランダのマウリッツハイス美術館のプロモーションビデオにも出演しています。however, the knock-out mouse grew to maturity, reproduced, and lived out its life like any other mouse. Life is nothing like a machine that will not work if it lacks even one of its parts. Observing that mouse, I remembered the words of Rudolf Schoenheimer (1898–1941), who wrote that life is not a “machine,” it is “flow.” Schoenheimer is the man who discovered that food is not simply absorbed into the body as fuel but is made part of the body; he also found that the atoms and particles that make up the body are broken down and discarded. He understood life as a flow or “dynamic state.” I translate this as “dynamic equi-librium,” because life is in a state of flow yet maintains bal-ance through synthesis and decomposition. Life does not dis-play great changes but a constant series of small changes. It is thanks to that trait that life fits flexibly into its environment, and when an organism becomes sick, it is capable of recovery. Let me tell a story of “dynamic equilibrium” revenge. The medicine prescribed to counter the symptoms of pollen fever is an anti-histamine. It suppresses the symptoms by occu-pying the cell’s receptors as an imposter histamine. But with continued use, the body (life) creates new histamines and receptors in order to cope with the influx of pollen, and in some cases that makes the body even more sensitive to pollen than before. This is a story that provides a warning or lesson of what happens when we think of life as a machine, forget-ting its dynamic tendencies. ─Reacquaintance with VermeerJust for your amusement, let me tell you the story of my interest in Vermeer. As I said before, I learned that Vermeer lived in the same city in Holland as microscope inventor Leeuwenhoek, but after that I forgot all about him. But one day during my post-doctoral studies when I was living in New York I met him again when I happened to wander into the Frick Collection gallery. I felt a curious connection with what appeared to me from his paintings to be Vermeer’s scientific mind. The fact that there are only 37 paintings surviving attributed to him excited my otaku-like spirit. If you flip this prime number, you get 73, which is also a prime number. I made up my mind to go and see all of Vermeer’s works, and it took me about twenty years and trips all over the world. Once I had seen them all, I came up with the idea of cre-ating a “theme park” in which you could see all 37 paintings at once. Using computers and high-tech printers, I re-created all Vermeer’s paintings. And we put on a show of all those paint-ings called “Vermeer Re-create.” My Vermeer otaku activities have become known around the world, and I even appear in a promotion video made for the Mauristhuis museum (The Hague), which has in its col-lection Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.372018 WINTER37FORUM
