地形的なワークプレイス空間屋根面も市松状に分節し、自然の光と風を取り入れています。大空間全体で均質な照度を確保するのではなく、自然な明るさの分布が感じられるよう、たとえば中央の吹き抜けの上部はハイサイドライトを大きくとるなどして、市松のエリアごとに採光の程度に変化をもたせました。照明も自然光と呼応した調光調色制御可能な間接照明としています。　軽快な屋根には設備機器を設置せず、1・2階のすべての設備は階のあいだ、すなわち2階床下に収納しています。その断面懐の大小に応じて、ワークプレイスは市松状のエリアごとに350mmずつのレベル差をもっています。大きなワンプレートの平面ですが、場所ごとに地形のように高さや空間の開け方、視線の抜けが異なり見え隠れする、「市松状のランドスケープ」です。　実験室のゾーニング、スパン、上下階の各機能と吹き抜けの配置・関係性を調整し、ベースの市松を少しずつ崩していくことで、静的な図式を超えてより自然なランドスケープとして感じられ、研究者が働く場所を自由に選べるようにしました。ワークプレイスの一体感を優先して、コアや水廻り、設備スペースは周縁に分散配置しています。Workspace as a LandscapeThe checkered pattern of the upper floor was also applied to the roof forms to bring in natural light and air. Rather than being distributed equally throughout, light quality is varied within the large volume, including light entering through the large clerestory windows in the upper portion of the central atrium. The indirect lighting scheme is adjustable for both intensity and color and also coordinated with natural lighting. To keep the lightweight roof unencumbered, all HVAC equipment was placed in the space between the first and sec-ond floors. Depending on the dimensions of the interstitial space, some squares of the checkered layout were raised by 350 mm, creating a landscape of varying levels, openings, and sightlines. By adjusting the lab zoning, spans, the placements of the various functions on the two floors and the atria, and the relationships among them, and by slight disruptions of the checkered pattern, we were able to turn a static schemat-ic into something resembling a natural landscape where researchers can freely select where they work.
