Photography｜華為技術 有限公司／Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.Why Reconstruct Historical Townscapes for an Innovative Research Facility?We aimed to create a workplace environment that is the polar opposite of the environment centered around cool and fun interior spaces created by the IT giants on the West Coast of the United States. Historical townscapes are made up of elements that have been generated naturally or have developed spontaneously. They contribute to the towns’ character and diversity, but are difficult to create deliberately. The process takes a long time, but it adds depth to the townscape. Recreating these elements of chance, such as streets, using the historical towns as refer-ence points, a rich townscape with character and diversity can be built in a short period of time. Based on this conviction, we sought to design workplaces enriched from the outside in. In addition, while employing modern technology, in order to give outside spaces something of the depth of historical townscapes, we insisted on using real stone, brick, and other materials in dimensions used in traditional construction, showcasing the natural strength that comes from stonework and brickwork walls.
