NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISM
101/136

HIGH DENSITY, LOW CARBONBinhai New Area is a waterfront business area in Tianjin City, the annual GDP and growth rate of which has exceeded the Pudong Area of Shanghai since 2010. Yujiapu Financial District is a part of the central business district of Binhai New Area and has been designated to become the rst Low Carbon Model Town (LCMT) by the Asia-Pacic Economic Cooperation (APEC). Nikken Sekkei carried out the feasibility study for the implementation of LCMT in Yujiapu as a partner in this Japan-China joint project.Sectoral indexes related to CO2 emissions by transportation and buildings were established to encourage awareness and to promote environment-friendly modes of transportation as well as sustainable building technologies. In addition, indirect indexes concerning issues such as bio-diversity protection and water resources preservation are also proposed. It is expected that this hierarchical evaluation system will lead the city to a more efcient and nature-friendly life cycle, while providing people with a better living environment. Proposed strategies to reduce energy demands include the introduction of area energy management systems as well as the utilization of renewable energy. Strategies for reuse and recycling of natural resources are also proposed to further reduce energy consumption.Other strategies aim towards a better quality of life in general, creating a pedestrian oriented sustainable city. Transit-oriented development strategies are proposed together with strategies which seek to create convenient and comfortable non-motorized mobility. Dedicated environmental strategies for the waterfront seek to protect natural habitats, while low carbon strategies target the achievement of comfortable living environments. Implementing high quality business infrastructures and information networks is expected to enable future development potentials in line with the aspirations of this nancial city. Establishing Yujiapu as a low-carbon and environmental development is expected to attract future investments and growth of the city.Transportationin 2010 (Present)in 2020 (mid-term)(50% CO2/GDP)in 2030 (long-term)TransportationTransportation22 milliont-CO2/aBuildingBuildingBuildingBAU(Business as Usual)50%reduction30%reductionAPEC Low Carbon Model Town - Case Study 1 | Tianjin, China, 2010Site Area: 385 hectares | BUA: 9.5 million sqm | Height: Max. 300 m253035404550556065Surface temperature distribution August 12th, 1PM[°C]Floor area ratio<33-44-55-66-77-88-99-1010-20>20Future goals of CO2 emission reduction.NSRI
