NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISMLONG VISIONS112 _ 113SENSITIVE URBAN INTERVENTIONHaving been awarded rst prize in an international urban design competition for the existing urban center of Ho Chi Minh City; Nikken Sekkei was appointed to conduct urban design studies with the aim of establishing guidelines for the historic city center. The winning proposal sought to achieve a balance between historical preservation and the requirements for future development potential. Core strategies included the implementation of a high-quality pedestrian realm as well as public transportation modes to the city with the aim of easing trafc congestion and opening up additional development capacities. Part of this was a wide-ranging underground network for circulation of private cars, trains and pedestrians, which would seamlessly link with adjacent developments. The formulation of detailed development plans for the city center was accompanied by a series of workshops with key stakeholders, which were organized to incorporate a variety of inputs into the process. In addition to this, multiple criteria and indicators such as infrastructure capacity, road capacity, road area ratio, public transportation network, preservation of historically valuable buildings, public spaces and green spaces were examined and nally incorporated into legal urban development controls.HCMC CBD Urban Design | Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 2007Site Area: 930 hectares | Planning Horizon: 30 years
