NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISM
127/136

EAST ASIANikken Sekkei’s design activities in East Asia began during the era of China-Japan friendship in the 1970s. The design of the China World Trade Center in 1990 was a major turning point, with steady expansion since. We now have three business bases in Shanghai, Beijing, and Dalian. With regard to master plans, after the fruition of plans with themes that integrated history and today, such as Shanghai’s Xintiandi in 2000 and the area around the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an in 2005, we have been involved in a range of city planning and urban design projects in cities throughout China. A popular topic of urban development in China now is “urbanization.” Urban development of China, which has been growing rapidly, is trying to make a large shift to urban development focusing on environmental quality and people’s lives. By submitting ideas on themes such as TOD and Smart City-global project themes that are our strong area of expertise-in forms that match China’s unique society and city structure, Nikken Sekkei will put forward proposals for new types of cities that have distinctive features and are highly feasible. In addition to mainland China, Nikken Sekkei has been continuously involved in a variety of projects in South-Korea, Taiwan and Mongolia.ASEANNikken Sekkei’s activities in Southeast Asia began with design projects related to production facilities and plants in Indonesia and Malaysia in the 1970s. Since then, a wide range of activities have been implemented in areas throughout Asia such as the design of public building projects receiving aid from the Japanese government and the formulation of a new town master plan in Johor Bahru.Entering the 2000s, there was an increase in architectural design and master plan projects mainly in Vietnam. Ofces to gather information were established in Hanoi in 2006, Ho Chi Minh City in 2007, and Singapore in 2013, and we are presently engaged in various infrastructure, planning, urban design and architecture projects in the ASEAN region, in association with locally registered professionals.Currently, a signicant percentage of the world’s infrastructure investment is being directed to the ASEAN region. In particular, in recent years attention has been drawn to infrastructure-integrated urban and architectural development in urban areas. As this is denitely Nikken Sekkei’s eld of expertise, we would like to use our achievements in Japan to make proposals for integrated public design.MENA, GCCNikken Sekkei has participated in many key projects in the MENA region and GCC area. Beginning with master plans for the waterfront development in the Arab Gulf States, we have been involved in many types of projects from proposals for new housing communities reecting changes in lifestyles, to planning concerning Mecca and Medina, the holy cities of Islam. The Dubai ofce, which we opened in 2005, is the central hub for management of these projects, and provides a variety of services in line with local needs. We always consider the requests of the clients with thorough care, and make it our principle to offer proposals that surpass their expectations.Deep consideration of the unique culture, climate, and society is essential in creating master plans for this area. All projects are implemented under Nikken Sekkei’s basic philosophy of “implementing project visions of international standards using Japanese design quality, and offering services according to unique local needs.” We hope to broaden our areas of activity in this region.RUSSIA, CISFor the last 10 years, Nikken Sekkei was fortunate to be involved as a master planning consultant to work on some important projects in major cities of Russia, such as Moscow, St Petersburg, Nigny Novgorod and Krasnoyarsk. As in other emerging countries, TOD and Smart City are again the keys to restructure the urban environment and people’s quality of life. In Russia, rapid introduction of capitalism over the past 20 years has resulted in the improvement of the infrastructure being unable to keep up with the speed of developments. Urbanized areas suffer from chronic and severe trafc congestion and no progress has been made in improving energy efficiency of the city as a whole. Given this situation, the Russian government has, for example, begun to introduce the concept of TPU (transportni peresadochni uzel) to promote convenience in transferring between transportation systems. By augmenting this idea with the Japanese concept of TOD, in which the surrounding area is also developed, Nikken Sekkei proposes a form in which the infrastructure and the city develop together in harmony.INDIANikken Sekkei’s activities in India began after entering the 2000s. Compared to other regions, we do not have a long history in this country, but during this time we have been involved in several important projects such as the Infosys Chennai IT Campus and the Hyderabad Metro Station design. In particular, from 2013 we have also been involved in development projects in major metropolitan areas such as Delhi and Mumbai, and also projects such as those related to DMIC and Andhra Pradesh. We are focusing on India as a market with high potential. Just as in ASEAN, infrastructure investment is flourishing in India, and in line with this, new city development and urban redevelopment is also advancing. Nikken Sekkei’s strength in architecture and urban design as well as civil and environmental engineering, combined with knowledge of Japanese technology creates a combination of expertise well suited to contributing to India’s urban development and we plan to expand our efforts in the market going forward.
