Its historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its beautiful scenery and canals have it often referred to as the Venice of the North.Located 20 km outside of the historic city core, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, a new city quarter will arise offering a distinctive lifestyle. While the low-laying old city of St. Petersburg is protected from ooding by a dam, the 810 ha site for this new city district is designed to lter water with the ow of the tide. Strategically placed canals will manage the ow of water through the city, while also contributing to an attractive public realm.The new city establishes eight distinctive neighborhoods. The “Festival Core” is the city’s central business district. Located around the central water basin, this district will focus on commercial and entertainment facilities. The “Ofce Core”, “Grand Canal” and “SOHO” districts will provide flexible spaces for commercial mixed-use development. Four primarily residential neighborhoods, each with their own unique character complete the district.The new city district is expected to be served by a new public transportation system that will connect the site to the greater network and will promote non-vehicular mobility within the site. The transportation system will be linked to a comprehensive underground pedestrian network to allow comfortable mobility even in the deepest winter months. Climate and site-specific energy management systems are proposed to lower energy demand of the neighborhood.The urban design features a reinterpretation of classic European design aspects with the introduction of axial linkages, dotted public spaces and corresponding designs on both sides of the street leading to a coherent denition of the urban realm.
