with private enterprise, have been collaborating since then in an epochal urban renewal and redevelopment project for the entire station infrastructure. The guidelines produced envision a future image of the area centering on Shibuya Station with surrounding function-specific clusters enhancing the respective characteristics of each area. These guidelines are intended to promote a comprehensive approach to the area’s urban development by all the participating stakeholders. In 2010, the Shibuya Station Central District Design Committee was set up to encourage projects to adhere to the Redevelopment Plan. The Committee provides liaison and coordination with participating companies regarding the design of the buildings and public realm. The Station redevelopment includes a phased reorganization of functions in both horizontal and vertical form as well as the enhancing of station facilities in general. Special attention is given to pedestrian realm, and several measurements to enhance circulation and access have been put into place. The aim to vertically separate pedestrian, vehicular and railway circulations is achieved with the help of Shibuya’s natural topography, which allows skybridges and underground passages to emerge. So called “Urban Core” are the nodes in the network that allow vertical mobility and access to the street level and connected buildings. This organization provides the greatest station-integrated development possible, achieving a convenient, amenitized and safe pedestrian realm. The entire redevelopment is scheduled to be completed in 2027. Phased updates will be conducted as “open heart surgery”, with Shibuya Station continuing to function as a busy transportation hub. Nikken Sekkei has been tasked to coordinate all redevelopment efforts and actions, while at the same time participating in the design of the districts core elements.
