VERTICAL CITYShibuya Hikarie | Tokyo, Japan, 2012 Site Area: 0.96 hectares | BUA: 145,000 sqm | Height: Floors: 34 above, 4 below / 182.5 m Shibuya Hikarie is the rst major project in Shibuya’s transformation process. The development aims to create a synergy of people, goods and information to become one of Tokyo's most popular destination. A massive, 182 m high, 34-story facility initiates change in the old urban order. The building’s three major functions are stacked in a vertical form-retail shops, restaurants and cafes at the podium, creative spaces including event spaces and a musical theater above the podium, and offices at the top. The design of Shibuya Hikarie is based on a concept of lively, open, and synergistic space. Its distinctive facade evokes the essence of the three-dimensional city, with its three vertical blocks representative of urban districts and the elevators and escalators running through it functioning like “streets.” Being located at the bottom of Shibuya valley and adjacent to Shibuya Station, the building connects to its surroundings on multiple levels. Aboveground it channels pedestrian traffic to and from the east side of Shibuya Station, across Meiji Avenue via a second floor pedestrian bridge, up to the top of Miyamasuzaka hill. Underground, it is connected at the third basement oor to the ticket gates of the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Subway line and Tokyu Toyoko line. In the near future the ticket gate for the Ginza Subway line will open on the second oor and the “Sky Deck” passing above the Ginza line tracks will connect with Shibuya Station’s central and west exits. To accommodate the vertical circulation in this complex volume, an “Urban Core” rises from the third basement floor to the fourth floor aboveground. Exterior light pours into the atrium space, which also provides natural ventilation to the subway below and is ringed by colorful digital display screens.Already today, Shibuya Hikarie could be described as one of the best connected buildings in Tokyo and maybe world-wide in terms of public transportation access. Its coherent integration with the adjacent stations provides seamless connectivity for visitors.NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISMSTATION INTEGRATED URBAN DESIGN030 _ 031
