EMBRACING THE STATIONQueen's Square Yokohama | Yokohama, Japan, 1997 Site Area: 4.46 hectares | BUA: 496,400 sqm | Height: Floors: 36 above, 5 below / 171.8 m Minato Mirai 21 is a large waterfront redevelopment project in Yokohama which started in the 1980s. Implemented as a master planned development, it was possible to coordinate and stage technical facilities with the urban development. During the planning and design stages of what later became Queen's Square Yokohama, it was decided to re-locate the new subway station for the whole district directly under the private development for better integration. The station itself was completed seven years after Queen's Square Yokohama had been completed, which was made feasible by the strategic master plan for the district which addressed both the station and the construction above.Queen’s Square itself consists of three ofce towers, a hotel, an event hall, commercial retail space and a parking area, all linked by a grand central pedestrian axis, "Queen Mall". The integration with the subway station features a signature red escalator that connects the retail oors to the station platform ve stories underground. Natural light is drawn down through a grand atrium all the way to platform level and provides an explosion of space and activity upon arrival in contrast to standard enclosed subway stations.Circulation within the integrated development has been designed to smoothly work in three dimensions. Queen Mall links perfectly with the surrounding exterior spaces as well as with the Landmark Tower and PACIFICO Yokohama convention facility. At the time of planning, design and realization, Queen’s Square was considered to be a new milestone in station-integrated design. Today, the Minato Mirai 21 district has developed into Yokohama’s prime destination for both residents and visitors who enjoy the superior accessibility by public transportation.0100200300mToIntercontinentalHotelQueen MallToLandmarkTower OfficeOfficeOfficeHotelNew Minato Mirai 21subway lineNew Minato Mirai 21subway lineMinatomiraiStationStation CoreQueen MallStation Core NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISMSTATION INTEGRATED URBAN DESIGN038 _ 039
