NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISM
42/136

Beijing is challenging the transformation of its urban structure by introducing intensive public transit networks. While the city had succeeded in adding transit stations at a rapid pace, efforts were not well coordinated and led to insufcient linkages and inconveniences for users. Beijing’s Liuliqiao Station is a transportation hub located between the third and fourth Ring Roads in the west of the city where Lines 9 and 10 of the Beijing subway intersect and long-distance and city bus terminals are also located nearby. An integrated and mixed-use station-city that builds on its excellent accessibility and connectivity to the public transportation network is necessary and has been proposed.Collaborating with the Beijing Institute of Architecture Design (BIAD), this proposed TOD model project in Beijing utilizes knowledge and experience from Japanese integrated station city projects. BIAD supported the proposal with the coordination of subway operators, landowners and government agencies.Respecting the already completed subway station facilities, a grand atrium is carefully inserted beside the station concourse as a central connector of various circulation paths. The existing long-distance bus terminal, relocated city bus terminal, concentrated taxi pool and individual development plots of the district are linked via underground passages and elevated skyways, providing seamless connectivity and access. The grand atrium as the station’s distinctive feature is surrounded by high-rise buildings with commercial uses, including ofces and hospitality. In response to Beijing’s relatively cold winter climate, the oor plan concept enables internal circulation through commercial facilities, underground passages and existing subway stations. Gardens integrated with the elevated pedestrian network provide additional amenities as spaces to sojourn and watch the busy flow of people.
