Economically, the GDP of Guangzhou City is only topped by Shanghai and Beijing. Due to its strong trade relationships with Hong Kong, like Shenzhen, Guangzhou City enjoys enormous development potential.Guangzhou North Station is located in proximity to Baiyun International Airport - one of the three largest international airports in China, and since 2009 is served by the Wuhan-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway Line. The urban development concept seeks to integrate station and surrounding city. The master plan leverages the excellent environment in the outer suburbs as well as the historical assets. Two strong development axes dominate the master plan concept; the urban axis focusses on station, airport and government, creating a new face to the city. The composition of public transportation facilities is improved by synchronizing urban functions and reinforcing networks. The second axis is the green axis, which focusses on environmental and cultural assets such as open space attractions and historic places. Both axes intersect at the station, were a compact city around the station contributes to the urban upgrade of the area.
