Guangzhou Baietan Commercial District is located on the west bank of Zhujiang River, 6 km southwest from the city center of Guangzhou.Provided with the task to propose the underground design for an area of roughly 95 ha, where three metro stations are located along with parking and other facilities, the solution was to think in three dimensions. Utilizing the void space reserved for a public park at the center of this commercial district, the design proposes to layer transit facilities, disaster prevention facilities, district cooling systems and underground retail facilities vertically underneath the park. With all public facilities compactly contained in one municipal-owned land-plot, land efciency is maximized and convenience for development and maintenance provided. The objectives to provide continuous liveliness, efcient mobility and reliable lifelines conclude in a design that implements the required 240,000 sqm of commercial oor space aligned and embedded three-dimensionally into the functional flows. Using the metro stations and other important places as nodes, the segments between them are designed to encourage various human interactions and activities to guarantee consecutive viability.The compact metro hub which connects four floors allows passengers a comfortable and efcient transfer between transit systems. By locating the metro hub underground, access to the park is improved which makes it more attractive for visitors. It is expected that this compact underground integration of public and commercial facilities could serve as a new engine, adding value to the commercial district by attracting foot trafc circulation.
