SUBTERRANEAN PLACEMAKINGSuzhou is an urban metropolis with distinctive water characteristics. Situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the shores of the majestic Taihu Lake. Suzhou’s canals, stone bridges and pagodas make the city a popular tourist destination.A 72 ha master plan for the business district of the Lake Tai New City is based on the concept of merging the urban development with the lush natural environment of the lake shore. The central axis of the district links the city to the lake, and the new CBD to the center of Suzhou via Metro Line 4. The plan features distinctive commercial spaces with a light-filled underground central arcade linking the subway station to the lake shore and both sides of the CBD. In total 300,000 sqm, and over three underground floors are placed within the central axis.
