Tianjin CBD Underground Design Competition | Tianjin, China, 2012 Site Area: 241 hectares | Below Floors: 2 CITYWIDE UNDERGROUND AMENITYNSC Aiming towards a CBD that efficiently connects with the surroundings at multiple levels, an international design competition was held to gather concepts and ideas on how to successfully utilize the extensive underground spaces in Tianjin’s CBD.The winning proposal and the subsequently commissioned detailed designs introduced the concept of value-added underground facilities. New underground facilities within the 241 ha, 69 city blocks making up the study area are strategically placed to support public life in the city and add value to the public realm. Underground shopping arcades and sunken plazas directly link to subway stations, offering additional spaces for communication and interaction. The planning and design of the walkable underground city is based on ve integrated elements. Identity - The underground city is inspired by ancient gated cities of the Chinese dynasty. The node and links are planned according to the walkable ancient grid patterns to bring back the rich history of the Tianjin area. Nature - Open air sunken plazas are introduced as nodes and connected by underground links. These sunken plazas introduce essential natural elements of natural sunlight, ventilation, greenery, and water to the underground, creating a lively atmosphere.People - With respect to the climatic circumstances, the underground network will provide comfort during hot summer and cold winter months, allowing all year-around activity to happen. Utilizing these spaces throughout the year, people will be enabled to establish a new vibrant culture within the underground city.Technology - Wireless connectivity and digital navigation will connect the subterranean to the above ground locations. Visualizing imageries from nearby location above, technology will help to better integrate above and underground, and allow a better orientation for users.Art - Open air sunken plazas also act as cultural stages, allowing both people above ground and underground to feel the vertically integrated realm. Museums, libraries, and cultural schools are introduced around the open air sunken plazas.Expecting social change and new development patterns in the future, the proposed underground concept has a built-in flexibility to adjust to new frameworks. The proposed concept utilizes self-sufficient modules in terms of evacuation, re-safety, and lifeline support, allowing easy extension in the future.NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISMSUBTERRANEAN SPACES054 _ 055
