Feudal lords had their residences here in the castle town near Edo Castle in the 17th century. During the 19th century, modern railway originated in Iidamachi, and by the 20th century Iidamachi station had become an important freight station. At the turn of the century, the 5 ha site made room for the i-Garden Air redevelopment introducing a 280,000 sqm floor area mixed-use quarter with ofces, hotel, commercial and residential offerings. The urban development theme was to reinforce a green connection linking the nearby Imperial Palace and Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens. The design focused on site-specic aspects of water, greenery and history and improving the interface and linkages through to neighboring areas. The green linkage concept galvanized all stakeholders into a single direction and resulted in a 300 m long tree-lined pedestrian walkway, uniformly setting back buildings from the street. The south half of the pedestrian mall is lined with tall, cone-shaped Metasequoia trees, which can be enjoyed throughout the year due to their fresh green in spring, deep green in summer, beautiful autumn colors, and ne-looking shape in winter. Employees meander through the green avenue, local kindergartens use it for an occasional stroll, and in the early morning hours joggers and people walking dogs take the stage. The pedestrian mall opens up into a central plaza towards the north of the quarter, which is surrounded by restaurants and commercial facilities. The plaza is frequently used for festivals and events. The new urban quarter has Iidamachi i-Garden Air | Tokyo, Japan, 2003 Site Area: 5 hectares | BUA: 280,000 sqm | Height: 35 floors / 153 mcreated a new center for the neighborhood which was formerly divided by the rail facilities.Nikken Sekkei’s headquarter building is located within the i-Garden Air redevelopment, allowing employees to enjoy the open and green spaces during lunch and coffee breaks, have chance interactions with people outside the rm, or just to recharge by inhaling the tranquility of the place.i-Garden Air
