NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISM 006 _ 007Urban Design and Planning, by nature is a complex pursuit due to the range of disciplines encompassed and the degree of varied stakeholders involved, in addition to the large scale of most projects. Furthermore, Urban Design and Planning touches on both the physical / spatial aspects of cities as well as the social aspect, meaning it is a discipline often called upon as a mechanism to “solve” perceived “problems” or “challenges” that accompany change in circumstances in either the physical or social environment. Japan has indeed seen its share of change and rapid urbanization and the profession has been called upon to address the challenges and opportunities associated with the rapid economic and urban growth seen in the 1960s and 70s. Nikken Sekkei has, as Japan’s largest consulting practice, repeatedly found itself called upon to play a key role addressing issues of urban grow. Through these challenges a body of experience has emerged that is both borne of the sensitivities of Japanese culture to the environment and the public good, and a reaction to the opportunities of the day. Significant parallels exist today with many cities in emerging countries, in particular, that are rapidly becoming urbanized, simultaneously bringing various urban challenges in conjunction with exploding population concentration and economic development. The issues are wide-ranging from URBAN DESIGN AND PLANNING AT NIKKEN SEKKEIBy Wataru Tanaka, Principal, Urban Design and Planning GroupBy 2050, the urban population is projected to reach 6.3 billion people, adding 2.5 billion new urban dwellers to existing and newly founded urban areas. By then, two-thirds of the world’s population are estimated to live in urban areas, with the majority of these to be found in cities in Asia and Africa. Planning and designing for these what the United Nations calls dynamic centers of creativity, commerce and culture is an unprecedented challenge and opportunity of our time, which we at Nikken Sekkei are honored to be actively involved in.
