Today Osaka’s “Ile de la Cite” finds itself located at the very heart of the “Water Metropolis”, Japan’s second most powerful economic city. The project site on Nakanoshima is located in front of the 22 stories, 108 m high Daibiru-Honkan Building, and is part of a private land holding, developed to become a privately-owned public space (POPS). Envisioning a symbolic space reecting Osaka’s character, emphasis was placed on integrating water, green and architecture throughout the landscape design. The design introduces a hill with abundant nature as a place in the center of the city for relaxation where visitors can enjoy the splendors of nature during each of the four distinct seasons. This gives rise to the project’s name-Shikinooka (“Hill of Four Seasons”). The combination of unied lines of the slopes and sharp edges of the decorative façade, water features evoking the waterfront, and blossom trees that bring spring to Nakanoshima create a unique public space experience. The park perfectly blends into the promenade and green belt along the river and has quickly become a popular destination for ofce workers seeking a green retreat, as well as for nearby residents who use the space as a neighborhood park.
