Wangjiadun Park Renovation | Wuhan, China, 2013 Site Area: 12 hectaresPARK & CITY RECONCILEDWangjiandun Park is a 12 ha urban park located at the north end of the new Wuhan CBD, functioning as an important anchor to the central North-South urban axis. Beijing-based developer Wuhan Group was in the process of renewing the park to mimic a “natural forest”, when Nikken Sekkei’s design team was asked to revisit the design in order to nd a solution that better represents the urban and cultural context of the site. The revised concept design addresses adjustments to scale and location, introducing prominent entry plazas as gateways to the park. The entry plaza as well as the slightly tilted grand circular lawn are envisioned to become public stages for residents.Pedestrian circulation within the park has been rationalized and optimized for easy wayfinding. Spatial linkages to the surrounding neighborhoods are introduced by spatial matching themes. Simplifying material and planting palettes achieves a clearer overall structure of the park as well as a stronger character and identity. The new renovation scheme not only aims to add value to the urban context by raising the quality of the public realm, but it also demonstrates a promising model case for urban parks in China.
