It is designated to become Nanjing’s next central business district built with the most advanced sustainable approaches. In the center of the island an important transportation axis divides the land into north and south. As an innovative measure to mitigate this unfavorable situation, a 24 ha elevated sky-park above the road and rail axis has been proposed. The new park serves to re-introduce connectivity between north and south, while also establishing a new public heart for the island.By taking advantage of the elongated site (1,300 m x 330 m), the park design restores pedestrian circulation with gently graded paths that are accessible from all directions. The elevated plaza at the center of the park with its elegant pedestrian bridges connecting to the surrounding is designed to become the civic heart of the district. Smoothly mounded hills covered by lush plantings are introduced as an interface to soften the height difference between the elevated park and the city’s ground level, while also functioning as a natural foreground to the vital activities up at plaza level. Multiple character zones are designed for a variety of outdoor activities and user groups. The park design invites a broad variety of people to actively participate in public life throughout the year. Its sinuous landform, the civic heart full of urban life, the dramatic integration with the surroundings, and its unique prospect looking out to the river and the city all make the park a new destination in Nanjing.
