In Japan’s case, especially in dealing with the rapid economic growth of the 1960s and 70s, experience has shown us that while such issues are indeed highly complex, the following were fundamental from an urban planning and design perspective, to eventually realize a highly stable society and economy: comprehensive management of urban planning and urban landscape that led to achieving high utilization rates of public transport, efficient use of space in high density conditions, creation of an urban environment that is resistant to disaster through the promotion of urban renewal, and the preservation of an outstanding environment through the application of advanced environmental technology and appropriate operation. We genuinely believe that we can apply the lessons learned from Japanese experience to help other cities around the world nd lasting solutions to their current urban and social challenges. In the same way we continue to dedicate our efforts, on the home front, to nding solutions to difcult new social scenarios such as our aging population, declining birthrate and weakening regional economies.
