Across the river lies a 13 ha triangular land parcel, conned by two major arterial roads in the north and west. It opens up towards the Neva River and Yelagin Island on the adjacent river bank.Currently the site is occupied by a variety of occasional facilities, many of them have no relation with each other nor do they relate to their location along the riverfront. While the site provides convenient access via car as well as by 4 tram stations along the northern border, the discontinuous, poorly maintained waterfront does not draw many visitors. The proposed master plan design is based on the idea of a ribbon, implemented by a network of open spaces along the riverfront. Building on existing facilities and landscape features, the design seeks to establish a continuous open waterfront. The meandering waterfront promenade “Primorsky Walk” features cafes, restaurants, watersport-related commercial outlets as well as other recreational facilities to activate the space year-round. A large open lawn area serves as multifunctional event space, allowing large public-viewing events as well as private BBQs during the summer.Eight distinctive zones are established along the 1.6 km waterfront. Each zone draws its identity and character from existing land-uses. Near the existing bridge to Yelagin Island, Triangle Gate serves as the eastern anchor to the promenade, featuring a pier and seating steps near the water. The west end dened by a new retail and event facility is proposed to focus on family use. A new car parking facility is integrated into the design and links with the proposed ferry service connecting with Yelagin Island. In the center of the site, renovation of the historic Alsuviev mansion building grounds will provide another event space with distinctive character. The proposed master plan establishes a functional balance between preservation, renewal and the introduction of new facilities. The coherent approach which also incorporates requirements for the adjacent Yelagin Island results in a popular, new destination for St. Petersburg.
