The Hoki Museum, a sanctuary dedicated to realist painting set against the backdrop of a lush, green forest, is reopening its doors.
This iconic museum dedicated to realist painting featuring 30-meter cantilevers that gently curve and overlap will reopen its doors on August 1, 2020 after recovering from damage caused by floods during last year’s heavy rains.
The museum is home to a collection of approximately 480 realist painting masterpieces mainly by contemporary artists collected by the museum’s founder, Mr. Masao Hoki, and an Italian restaurant and café where visitors can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine and wines while taking in the view of the forest.
So that the building itself would become a part of Mr. Hoki’s collection, the interior space is completely free of clutter, such as wall-finish and flooring joints, as well as suspended lighting. Together with the distinctive form of the building’s exterior, the interior space creates an optimal viewing environment for visitors to come face-to-face with every work of art, shut off from the outside world.
During renovation, the main electrical and heating facilities were moved aboveground and watertight doors were installed throughout the building. Various measures were also put into place to prevent damage from the unpredictable flooding caused by recent torrential rains that have been seen in various parts of the country. As the museum marks its 10th anniversary, the building has been updated to enhance its appeal, including refurbishing the finish of the interior and introducing a voice guidance system with the latest digital tools.
In response to the client’s strong desire to reopen the museum, the former architectural designers and contractors joined hands last fall, working together to bring the museum to the present. We invite you to visit the Hoki Museum, which features a fresh, new appeal.

The heavy rains of last October flooded the museum. With no rivers nearby, we never imagined that the museum would suffer damage from a flood. Please take care in these days of extreme weather conditions. Thanks to everyone, we were able to refinish the museum so that it is less vulnerable to flooding damage. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this November, I would like to mark a new chapter as we take a new step forward.
