Aerodynamic Tower Form
The headquarters of Astra International, one of the most prominent companies of Indonesia, is situated along one of the major thoroughfares of Jakarta, and towers over the skyline in Jakarta’s Central Business District. It also occupies the prime location within Astra International’s first property development project, an ambitious mixed-use development of a 2.8ha site that includes three adjacent residential towers. The tower shape is designed to express the philosophy of this large corporation that is itself representative of Indonesia. The rounded corners and exterior fins wrapping around the tower resembles the interlocking of two hands, an appropriate expression of “Cooperation”, a core mission of this conglomerate that brings together many multilateral businesses, and values each of its many thousands of employees.
This aerodynamic form brings benefits not only of aesthetic impact, but also structural optimization of the 261.5m tall building towards an effective wind mitigation strategy. With the glass fin and rounded corner treatments applied at diagonally opposite corners, the facade configuration decreases the negative pressure loading resulting from prevailing morning and evening winds by 20 to 30 percent compared to a rectangular building of the same volume.
