The aim of this hospital, onthe other hand, was to make a straightforwardhealing building, which would enjoy the benefits of Amamis abundant nature andhealing breezes, allowing the patients to physically experience thechanging seasons and the flow of time. The climate of Amami is sub-tropical, warm and rainy, but evenon a strongly sunny summers day, there is a pleasant breeze in theshade of the trees. The area also has abundant groundwater. Tomake the most of the plentiful benefits of nature, the building hasdeep eaves to take the strong sunlight gently into the interior. Theyallow open windows even on rainy days, so that the breeze flowsthroughout the building, to create a healthy building. The four wards have big bay windows, and outside them thereis a brick terrace, covered with temprered glass. It is called theWindTerracebecause when the bay windows are opened, a refreshingand pleasantly natural breeze moves through the day room.Groundwater at a stable year-round temperature of 21isused for drinking, and also for cooling outside air entering the wholebuilding, in a simple cooling system that means the building need notdepend on chillers even in the height of summer. Roof planting and asolar water heating system are among other measures used, with thecombined result that energy consumption is approximately one thirdof the consumption per unit area in a standard hospital.Katsuya Kawashima262006 FACTNIKKEN SEKKEI
