New TowerHeight and Beauty in Perfect Balance A fascination with lofty structures is shared by people of all ages.Since working on the original Tokyo Tower, Nikken Sekkei has designed a number of similar structures. Sophisticated blends of beauty and practicality provide excellent opportunities for struc-tural designers to show off their skills. The World's Tallest Self-Supported Steel TowerThe New Tower has been planned as a terrestrial digital broadcast-ing facility for the Tokyo metropolitan district. The 610-m-high structure will be the tallest self-supported steel tower in the world. Its silhouette, echoing the "warp" and "arch rise" seen in tradi-tional Japanese structures, will feature soft lines that shift gradu-ally from the base toward the top. This is achieved by a unique design involving the use of triangular and circular plane shapes at different heights. The legs form three open gates, designed to encourage bustling activity in the neighboring Asakusa area. In addition, observatories and restaurants are planned for the floors 350 m and 450 m above the ground. A traditional Japanese five-story pagoda has independent floors and uses the central pillar as an axis. It is said that the interaction caused between the central pillar and each story of the pagoda skillfully attenuates swaying in the event of an earthquake or a strong wind. The structural system of the New Tower could be seen as an attempt to reproduce the vibration-damping system of the five-story pagoda using the latest technology. Seismic energy-absorbing dampers are installed between the steel trussed tower body and the reinforced concrete central staircase (acting as the central pillar), allowing control of sway and enhancing the struc-ture’s TV broadcasting capabilities. Tower TechnologySince the late 1980s, many tower structures have incorporated top-mounted dampers to control the slow long-period sway caused by strong winds. Chiba Port Tower (125.15 m and built in 1986) was the first observation tower in Japan to be equipped with dampers. It is hollow and features a rhombic-plane steel brace structure surrounded by half-mirror glass. This tower opened the door to development of vibration-damping technology that enhanc-es habitability. Fukuoka Tower (234 m and built in 1989) also has dampers, and this design approach has been used extensively in subsequent high-rise buildings. The Seto Digital Tower (244.7 m and built in 2003) was planned using innovative, rational systems and design. Considering the effects on the environment surround-ing the tower, we adopted a slender shape with a height-to-width ratio of 7.5:1, so as to avoid creating an overpowering impression. The tower also has a soft form, with an off-white color and swell-ing curves. Harmony through Advanced Technology Towers have grown taller with progressive advances in scientific technology, finding new uses as facilities for TV broadcasting, observation points, and promotional structures. In Dubai, super-skyscrapers over 800 m in height are being constructed. We may even see a tower that reaches a height of over 1,000 m in the not-so-distant future. Through our ongoing focus on emerging tech-nologies, Nikken Sekkei will continue to create projects that will come to be viewed as architectural milestones. Michio Keii, Yasuo Kagami, Atsuo Konishi
