日本生命保険相互会社は、1889（明治22）年に大阪で創業し、1902（明治35）年の本店旧本館の完成とともに淀屋橋のこの地へ移り、社業の発展に伴い周辺に建て増しをしてきました。御堂筋に面する本店本館は、1938（昭和13）年に日建設計の前身である長谷部・竹腰建築事務所の設計により第一期が、戦争を挟んだ1962（昭和37）年に日建設計工務の設計により全体が完成しました。本館の外装である本格的な石積みは、大阪の中心地に欠くことのできない都市景観となりました。今般、事務部門を集約するため、本館に隣接する東館の建替えを行いました。あわせて南館の大規模改修を実施し、外装も石張りに一新しました。これにより淀屋橋地区のまち並みが強化され、あたかもずっと前からそこに建っていたかのような一体的な景観をかたち創ることができました。本館とその周辺のさらなる長寿命化にも貢献できたと考えます。Nippon Life Insurance Company opened for business in Osaka in 1889. Upon completion of the old head office building at Yodoyabashi in 1902, it moved there. With the growth of the company, its facilities expanded in the surrounding area. In 1938, the first-phase construction of the current head office building facing Midosuji Avenue, designed by the Hasebe Takekoshi Architectural Office (later Nikken Sekkei), was completed, and in 1962 the entire complex, designed by the Nikken Sekkei design firm, was completed. The genuine stone facade of the building became an inextricable part of Osaka’s central townscape. The East Building adjacent to the Main Building has been reconstructed to consolidate the office area. The South Building too has undergone large-scale renovations, lining the exterior walls with stone.
