Nikken Sekkei has been involved in projects to preserve the taste of the famous architecture of the Nakanoshima area. Some of the projects are:─● Bank of Japan Osaka Branch (Preservation/Reconstruction)The design preserves the Neo-Renaissance-style exterior of the old building constructed in 1903. Structurally what was done was to remove and reconstruct the entire inside of the building while preserving its outer shell. Then the copper shingle roof and dome and top-story rooms for important visitors were renovated and restored. The volumes of the main (new) wing were carefully articulated, as if embracing the old building and the courtyard between them, so as to harmonize with the townscape. ● Osaka City Hall (Reconstruction)With its deeply articulated look and granite cladding, the new building inherits the dignified look of the old Neo-Renaissance-style building completed in 1921. Its exterior features a rhythmical pattern of tall, stylized windows formed by copper-zinc alloy verticals. ● Daibiru-Honkan (Reconstruction)In order to imbue the new building as much as possible with the design sense of the old Osaka Building completed in 1925, this project involved removing the bricks, stones, and other materials of the former edifice that had stood for 90 years and after careful research and testing, reusing them in the new structure. The stone relief by Teizo Okuni, “Eagle and Girl,” was preserved and re-installed at the top of the semicircular arch over the central entrance to the building.● Daido Life Insurance Osaka Headquarters (Reconstruction)The original Daido Life Insurance Higobashi building completed in 1925 was built in Neo-Gothic high-rise-building style featuring large-sized terracotta tiles that were then fashionable in the United States. The new Daido Life Insurance Osaka Headquaters building at Higobashi preserves the image of the old building; while using terra cotta tiles of the same color, gloss, and texture, it boldly introduces all sorts of new technologies, realizing a Neo-Gothic-style high-rise building for the current age.─Toward Lively and Beautiful TownscapesToday Osaka’s Tosabori and Dojima river waterfronts as well as the Nakanoshima island between them are a forest of high-rise buildings. Nikken Sekkei has been involved with design and supervision in many of these buildings, and we have worked to give each one of them a distinctive character that contributes to a cityscape enlivened by water and greenery. For the people who live and work in this part of the city, what is important is not only that the high-rise buildings are attractive and interesting, but that the area is amenable to people passing through it on foot. Here we introduce projects that we designed in the hopes that they would induce people to walk in this part of the city.─● Miotsukushi PromenadeThe bank of the Tosabori riverside on the south side of the area extending from the Osaka City Central Public Hall to the 212015 Autumn 24
