大阪府立中之島図書館について本館（中央部分）は住友家第15代当主である住友吉左衞門友ともいと純の寄附によって1904（明治37）年につくられました。設計は住友本店臨時建築部の建築技師長であった野口孫まごいち市と技師の日高胖ゆたかです。その後、技師長となった日高胖により1922（大正11）年に本館の両翼に閲覧室が増築されました。明治初期には外国人の設計による建築が多かったのですが、その後、西洋建築を学んだ日本人建築家が活躍するようになった時代の最も優れた作品のひとつと言えます。　外観はルネサンス後期のパッラーディオ様式で、建物正面はコリント式円柱が並ぶギリシャ神殿を思わせる意匠、内部意匠はバロック様式を基本としながら中央にドーム状のホールを配置し、教会を思わせる壮麗なつくりとなっています。約56万冊の蔵書の3分の1を古典籍が占め、また、蔵書の多くが寄贈によることもこの図書館の特徴です。About the Nakanoshima Library The main building was built with a donation by Kichizaemon Tomoito, fifteenth head of the Sumitomo family, and completed in 1904. In the early days of Japan’s modernization, many prominent buildings were designed by foreign architects, but by this time, trained Japanese architects were active, and one of the most outstanding extant examples of their achievements is this building, designed by chief architectural engineer Magoichi Noguchi and engineer Yutaka Hidaka of the Sumitomo Corporation provisional architecture division.The exterior follows the Late Renaissance Palladio style with Corinthian columns at the front and the interior design, with its central dome reminiscent of a solemn cathedral, is basically Baroque.
