The first stage of interior renovations consisted of work on the entrance to the second floor that forms the main entry to the library and renewal of the men’s and women’s restrooms. When the building was originally built, the main entrance was the doorway on the second floor at the top of the great staircase of the main hall. Later, however, the entrance hall became a reading room, and the door was closed for more than 50 of the library’s 111 years. The present project reopened the doorway, restored the interior woodwork in a manner suitable to its role as the main entrance to the library, and installed automatic doors and new lighting fixtures.
