Maggies is an organization that aims to provide free emotional support and help for anyone affected by cancer. Maggies Centres are located around the Great Britain and various parts of the world. This gallery is a temporary structure built in front of the Mokuzai Kaikan building nearby Shinkiba Station as part of the Forestry Agencys project to expand the use of local timber for houses and other buildings. Driven by the concept of spreading the use of wood in the city, the gallery features a wood pavilion that can be assembled in a short period of time, and wooden public furniture that create comfortable new spaces enveloped by wood. The wood pavilion follows a minimalist design using domestic solid wood to provide a relaxing space in which the beauty and quality of wood can be appreciated. The structure is unitized to create a timber building that can be relocated to another place. The public furniture demonstrates generous-sized louver furniture of cedar; placement of those furniture in public spaces brings the warmth of wood into the city. The aim of the gallery is to challenge Japans townscape overwhelmed by the use of concrete, by bringing back the uses and appeal of wood. 62m2 使 Client General Incorporated Association Federation of Tokyo Wood OrganizationTotal floor area 62m2Structure WoodTimber Cedar, Japanese cypress, oakThe Feel of Space Endowed with Wood2016Wood GalleryKoto-ku, Tokyo2016 Takeyuki Katsuya / Yuki HiraiArchitectural Design Department, Nikken SekkeiYoshisato EsakaEngineering Department, Nikken Sekkei2342016 Summer 27WORKSFeature | Pushing the Possibilities for Architecture in Wood
