Taking advantage of Kumamoto prefectures prosperous lumber business, we were able to build large-scale wood-frame school buildings using solely market lumber. In order to maintain continuity with the childrens home environment and enhance their activities of daily living at school, we sought to create spaces that would become their second home. The subdivided single-story volumes blend into the neighboring low-rise residential district and the overlaps of the gently sloping rooflines resonate with the contours of the surrounding hills. Many of the children spend most of their time in a prone position facing the ceiling, so inside the building, the roof trusses are left unconcealed, the forms of their diverse structures entertaining the children with a kind of changing ceiling-scape differing from room to room. 6,185m2 使 Client Kumamoto PrefectureCo-architect Taikou Architecture Office Co., Ltd.Total floor area 6,185m2Structure Wood, reinforced concrete and steelTimber Cedar, Japanese cypress (Kumamoto-grown) Roof Truss Delights for Childrens Second Home Facility西2014Kumamoto Prefectural Kagayakinomori Support SchoolNishi-ku, Kumamoto2014 Kiwamu Nakashima / Kensaku TakakiArchitectural Design Department, Nikken SekkeiMikiko KatoEngineering Department, Nikken Sekkei082016 Summer 27WORKSFeature | Pushing the Possibilities for Architecture in Wood
