Photography｜1：近代建築社／Kindaikenchiku-sha｜2：フォワードストローク／Forward Stroke3–4：川村剛弘［クリエイティブアイズ］／Takehiro Kawamura [CreativeEyes]Public Space Connected to the TownIn addition to high-profile public facilities such as the Sapporo Cultural Arts Theater “Hitaru” and Sapporo Municipal Library and Information Center, Sapporo Sosei Square brings together a variety of functions̶businesses including a broadcasting station and a newspaper company, and facilities that support to the envi-ronment of the surrounding area such as a district heating and cooling plant, indoor parking, and a public bicycle parking lot. The business functions including the broadcaster and offices are placed along the west side facing the road toward the station, and public functions are placed on the east side facing Sosei River. Covered walks were provided on the south and the west sides used by most pedestrians. Together with the indoor walkways (SCARTS Mall and passage) they promote the comfort of active pedestrian spaces in a city known for snow and cold. For buildings containing many different functions, we believe that public spaces designed with a focus on spatial connections and relationships help link the building to the city, enrich people’s activities, and ultimately enhance the city’s appeal. We hope that this building will be a catalyst for more thoughtful and useful pub-lic spaces that contribute to Sapporo’s urban renewal.まちとつながるパブリックスペース さっぽろ創世スクエア内には、札幌文化芸術劇場「hitaru」、札幌市図書・情報館などの公共施設を中心に、放送局や新聞社を含む業務系施設、周辺地域環境に貢献するDHC（地域冷暖房）プラント、屋内駐車場、公共駐輪場など多様な機能が集約されています。このうち、業務施設の集積する駅前通側（西側）に放送局やオフィスを含む業務系機能を、創成川に面する東側に公共機能を配置しました。　敷地内に設けられた歩道沿い空地のうち、特に歩行者の多い南側と西側には雁木（雪よけの庇）空間が設けられています。また、東西や南北方向の屋内化された貫通通路（SCARTSモール、パサージュ）が、雁木空間とともに、積雪寒冷地における快適な歩行空間やまちのにぎわいの確保に一役買っています。　多機能が集積する建築では、その「つながり方」に着目し、パブリックスペースをデザインすることで、まちと建築が連続し、人々の活動も豊かにつながり、まちの魅力が増すのではないかと考えています。次の札幌中心部のまちづくりに、良質なパブリックスペースがつながっていくきっかけとなることを期待しています。142019 SPRING38SPOTLIGHT
