The facility has been visited daily by large numbers of people since the opening, and the benches are filled con-stantly, which makes us happy that our design has fulfilled its potential. We hope that it will continue to be a center of urban life from now into the future. The project encountered many challenges along the way to construction completion and opening. However, thanks to the meeting of minds with Nikken Sekkei, Hokkaido Nikken Sekkei, and the many other parties involved, we were able to overcome each difficulty we faced. I would like to thank all those involved in the project.Part of a Class 1 Urban Area Redevelopment Project, Sapporo Sosei Square was built as a pilot project of Sapporo Sosei Sanku, the new urban development hub in Sapporo. The site is located adjacent to the Odori subway station, and before redevelopment most of the city block was used as a parking lot, but we felt it held tremendous potential as a gathering place and source of vitality for the area. One of our main design concepts, therefore, was creation of spaces that would draw people and foster activity in a building composed of both public and private facilities including a theater. Creating spaces for vital activity became our priority, and our basic strategy was to place facilities that would be used by many people and stir the most movement on the lower floors, such as the library and information center, rather than the theater.
