* “We are the city.” tional stage, and even assisting with experi-ments in asset utilization.─ “Park Pack” to Generate ActivityMany public spaces, such as urban parks, have had restrictions placed on activities due to complaints from neighbors and jurisdictional issues. Park Pack, planned and operated by Ultra Public Project,* a group in which Nikken Sekkei participates, has taken up the challenge of restoring rich and lively activities to such public spaces for urban residents. Park Pack is a “movable park,” origi-nally designed for an event called Tokyo Midtown Design Touch 2018 at the request of event-sponsor Tokyo Midtown, to create a park designed for the future. Park Pack packages, prepared in such a way as to spark a variety of activities, for transport to all kinds of public spaces.* Under the slogan “We are the city,” Ultra Public Project contemplates and proposes community building from the perspective of various human-centered program-ming, ideas, and how-tos instead of simply developing built structures and spaces. The group is composed of Rhizomatiks Architecture, TYO Inc., Dentsu Live Inc., Nikken Sekkei, and Propeller & Co.Tokyo Midtown DESIGN TOUCH In addition to planning and implementing numerous events to show the possibilities of parks, Tokyo Midtown Design Touch 2018 developed tools called “modules.” Designed in conjunction with Park Pack, the modules allow users to create a variety of shapes by combining dierently shaped panels made of packaging materials. Unlike conventional toys that prescribe how they are played with, the modules stimulate play for the park visitors to enjoy in their own way, such as by connecting the panels freely into large objects, making a dome, creating at sheets to sit on, and so on. A public call was issued for ideas on ways to utilize the public spaces along the Shibuya River known as “Shibuya River Street” and some of the ideas received have been implemented as a social experiment.
