In order to preserve the detail that creates the open, transparent feeling, with glass held by support frames on both interior and exterior, we needed to devise measures to assure safety during major seismic events. We changed the laminated glass in the ceiling to light-weight aluminum plates. Seismic bracing and SUS wires act as a safety backup for the hanging bolts within the ceiling to prevent ceiling material from falling. The original designer sought to create “beauty undimin-ished by the passage of time” using 8 mm-thick glass plates. Forty-five years later, we recreated the same beauty using 4 mm-thick aluminum plate, another industrial product, finished by craftsmen using a large-scale mirror paint film coating and a scientifically tested construction technique.1 :無柱エントランスホールの美をレトロフィットにより再現。2 : 周辺環境に配慮したランドスケープが特徴的な待合スペースとサツキの昇り庭。1 : e beauty of the column-less entrance hall recreated by retrotting.2 : Waiting area and sloped azalea garden landscaped to suit the surrounding environment.21192019 AUTUMN40Feature | WORKS
