With the addition of a hotel to the site, the structure has now entered a new chapter as a tourist landmark. I am pleased to hear positive feedback about the hotel. As a manager, it is my hope that the tower will remain viable until it is 100 years old. Now that our operations are well underway, I find myself thinking again: What was the Nagoya TV Tower? At the time of its construction, it was more than just a television-broadcasting facility—the city wanted to be able to efficiently disseminate disaster information based on the experience of the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Although we were unable to set up a monument or exhibition space with the recent renovation, the tower has been designated a cultural property and will itself be a valued monument—a source of civic pride—in the years ahead. While Japan lacks the donation culture observed in the West, people are using crowdfunding to raise capital. At present, charitable causes have an easier time garnering funds when donors are promised attractive thank-you gifts, as we have seen with Japan’s “hometown tax” system. Cultivating awareness and appreciation of culture is still a work in progress, so we will work to increase the tower’s appeal by incorporating its history into our activities. Summer evenings in Nagoya are hot and humid, but Hisaya-odori Avenue carries refreshing breezes through the city center, and visitors enjoy the pleasant ambience of the beer garden at the tower’s base. まるふるさと納税のような様相で、文化に対する意識はまだまだこれからのように感じます。文化に対する意識を醸成するためにも、今後も歴史を踏まえた活用をし、魅力アップを続けてまいります。 新型コロナウイルス感染症の拡大で大変ですが、夜は賑わってきました。名古屋の夜は蒸し暑いのですが、久屋大通が都心の風の通り道となり、テレビ塔の足もと空間のビアホールは快適です。このあたりの魅力も、ぜひ知ってもらいたいと思っています。 市民に応援されるタワーであることA Tower that Lives On with the Support of Local Citizens
