We began by using a digital 3D scanner to make a detailed record of the current status of the garden. This enabled us not only to capture an overall picture of the garden but also to take precise measurements down to the diameter of each and every planted tree, and record these along with the leaf distribution and position of the larger plants on the ground plan. Additionally, using a cross-section view, we considered the view of Inuyama Castle, which had been obscured by the growth of tall trees, from the site. We are confident that our data collection regarding the elevation of the site, extending from its artificial hill to Jo-an, the shoin reception building of the former Shōdenin Temple, and points on the garden’s exterior, will bring benefits for the future management of the garden as it undergoes changes over time. Under the guidance of Kanji Nomura, who is familiar with the site’s original appearance and condition, we have revital-ized the garden and endowed it once again with the intent of Sutemi Horiguchi, its creator.1 : View of Jo-an tea house and the shoin reception building of the former Shōdenin Temple (after landscaping).2 : View of Jo-an and the shoin of the former Shōdenin Temple (before landscaping).
