Phoogaphy|1–6:古館克明/Katsuaki FurudaeA Cultural OasisThe building site is located on Gezira Island in central Cairo. This 120,000-square-meter island in the Nile River is home to a large number of embassies and is also well known as a tour-ist destination. The overall plan consists of three open court-yards laid out symmetrically, and the space expands, as one moves from the main entrance toward the rear, both horizon-tally and vertically. The complex features a 1,200-seat main hall and a 450-seat small hall with removable seats, as well as an open-air theater, museum, art gallery, and other facilities. A concerted effort was made to incorporate traditional Egyptian elements in the building design. In expressions of Ottoman-period Islamic style, both the entrance hall and main hall stage are covered by a slightly peaked dome, and we created a semi-outdoor space with a peristyle courtyard, arches, and domes as key features. We made use of local methods and materials in the construction and sourced local plants for greenery. Likewise, equipment systems were adapted to Egyptian technical standards, with consideration given to ease of maintenance.1 : View to the main entrance from a neighboring building.2: Interior of the main hall.3 : Aerial view. 4 : View along one of the courtyards.5 : Presidential box lobby.6: Main lobby.56trt291 : 隣接建物よりメインエントランスを望む。2 : 大ホール内観。3 : 全景。4 : 中庭沿いの風景。5 : 貴賓席ロビー。6 : メインロビー。
