The plan involved surrounding the area around the Kaaba with a multi-level arcade, thereby doubling capacity to receive pilgrims.Receiving 80,000 Additional Pilgrims without OvercrowdingNikken Sekkei’s proposal entailed slightly reducing the area of the courtyard itself and also reducing the floor area on the courtyard side of the existing building, using the space to build a new multi-level arcade and pedestrian passages. This would increase the mosque’s capacity to receive pilgrims from 50,000 to 130,000 people per hour. We used computer crowd-flow simulation to verify that the crowd density resulting from a gathering of 130,000 people would not present a safety hazard. The project started with a 2008 competition and has pro-ceeded in phases.
