They are taking much more interest in these buildings than before.Yoshiyuki Yamana (Yamana) People have been engaged in renovation of buildings over the last 20 years or so. And some people—young people included—have realized that beer tastes better in a place with an old ambience than in a spanking new building.Minori Kai (Kai) In the past few years, we’ve been seeing events like the Living Architecture Museum Festival Osaka. I'm happy to know there are so many architecture fans like myself out there. Miyazawa When Ms. Kai’s book Tokyo Historical Architectures and Cafeterias (X-Knowledge, 2018) first came out, I had been working on a series called Architecture Pilgrimage (Nikkei Architecture) for about 10 years. It had occurred to me that food might be the next topic to expand the scope of the series, but Ms. Kai beat me to it. Kai As an amateur architecture enthusiast, I wanted to convey Miyazawa How do we go about explaining the marvels of archi-tecture to people with no expert knowledge?Yamana I think the biggest problem is that there’s a perception that people in architecture are an exclusive group. Those of us in the industry really have to try to be more open and accessible.Kai These days, photographs are also very impor-tant—photos that show buildings from a familiar per-spective and excite people to want to visit them.Miyazawa What do you think is the relationship between public institutions such as cultural property designation and the utilization of heritage architecture? Yamana The word “heritage” comes from the French “hériter”; it’s derived from an older word meaning “to inherit.” When people gain a shared awareness of this concept of inheritance as something received into their care, it creates public value, which then carries over to the administration of cultural prop-erties. For designated cultural properties, what matters most is the people involved with the building who inherit its care. Miyazawa What do you think can be done for the heritage archi-tectural movement other than seeking governmental recogni-tion? Yamana The building itself has to remain attractive so that peo-ple will want to learn about it. It’s also important, however, that people have opportunities to learn about the building by get-ting a good look at it—for example, while out for a stroll.Kai I agree that it’s very important to get out and enjoy walking around our cities. I hope we see more things like established walking routes and tours, so people can have more opportu-nities to experience these buildings firsthand and meet people with similar interests.to others the excitement that buildings inspire in me. I don’t have the expertise to write about complex structural aspects, so first of all, I want to let peo-ple know what sort of experience awaits them at a particular building. Le Lieu Unique,Nantes, Franceヘリテージ建築の魅力について、注目される文筆家・学識者の皆様と語る、あっという間の1時間半でした。 「ときめき」という純粋な切り口で捉える甲斐先生の感覚は、宮沢氏が指摘された通り、建築の専門家による発信とは異なる、新鮮な視点です。この新しい魅力発見、そして発信が、まちに暮らす多くの人の共感を得て、時代の潮流がつくられ新たな文化となっていくのだと感じられました。 世界遺産などのヘリテージの審査においても、「地域の人がその存在をどのように感じているかをヒアリングすることがある」との山名先生のご指摘は、やはりヘリテージの価値が建造物の歴史・芸術・学術的価値だけでなく、まちに暮らす人との社会的関係における価値の重要性を示唆しています。講演中、魅力的な建築のひとつとして挙げられた世界遺産のファン・ネレ工場は、人と社会の関係を示す好例です。1926年にロッテルダムから少し離れた農村地域に突如として現れた未来的な巨大な工場は、全面ガラスで明るく、クリーンで、当時の人々の生活を一変させたのではないでしょうか。 私たちヘリテージビジネスラボも、歴史的建造物を社会的、経済的に活性化するだけでなく、建物に込められた多くの人の思いをつないで参ります。 The hour and a half we spent discussing the appeal of heritage architecture went by in a flash. As Miyazawa notes, the excitement Minori Kai describes, coming as it does from a fresh, perspective, is something we don’t often hear about from experts. It seems to me that discovering the attraction of these buildings and spreading the word about them has resonated with many city dwellers and created a new culture, leading to new trends. Yoshiyuki Yamana noted that in the evaluation of heritage sites—including those being considered for World Heritage status—“local residents are sometimes interviewed and asked how they feel about the existence of such sites.” This suggests heritage buildings are important not only for their historical, artistic, and academic value but also for their social relevance to the people who live among them. The World Heritage-listed Van Nelle Factory that we talked about is a good example that demonstrates the relationship between people and society. The enormous futuristic-looking factory, which appeared in a rural area outside Rotterdam around the late 1920s, has a glass and steel facade that emphasizes brightness, and it was a hygienic place to work; it must have had a transformative effect on people’s lives when it was built. We at the Heritage Business Lab will do our part to not only revitalize historic buildings from a societal and economic standpoint but also to inherit and transmit the dedication many people brought to the structures.
