The project began with the development of the facade, a phase of parallel efforts by designers and developers on different teams. In order to effectively shield against sunlight without cutting off visibility from the building’s interior, we devised a system of inverse analysis for back calculating the optimal aperture for sun shielding to be made at the base of the circular metal units. Since the effects of surrounding buildings vary depending on factors such as orientation, the number of stories, and location, the aperture shapes were modified for units at different places around the exterior wall. In the making of the circular units, we applied the production technology used by our development collaborator, Seo Inc., in the production of Buddhist ritual implements and other metalcraft, as it is simple and affordable, and results in a high-strength product. We were also able to achieve high performance at low cost by using corrosion-resistant ZAM® metal coating for the finish. The parts are held in place by ultrathin tension wire, which controls wind-related swaying or twisting while also allowing for a facade surface that can conform to various configurations.
