Throughout the design process, the theme of “Active Learning Everywhere” was implemented in all facets of the project. The goal was to have areas in addition to individual classrooms serve as places that students could actively utilize for independent study. found scattered along corridors, elevator halls, staircases, escalators, and other circulation routes, all of which are nec-essarily stacked for functional purposes. Given the limitations arising from the shape and floor space in the case of this particular high-rise building, we gave thought to which areas could have value as spaces for fostering student independ-ence—areas such as redundant spaces outside classrooms or common spaces used only for transit. The design seeks to give students more options as learning styles diversify, and In a high-rise school building, such additional spaces are at the same time create a vehicle for fostering students’ independence and diversity—a building that excites academic motivation at every turn.
