The large, roofed plaza facing the main university square serves as a depart-ment base camp for students. The main circulation route for movement among classrooms is the Ecological Void, a three-story atrium space connected by gentle-incline staircases. The space gives students a chance to experience natural-energy usage firsthand: daylighting and ventila-tion create a comfortable and pleasant environment, while air conditioning load is reduced through enhanced insula-tion, solar-radiation shielding, and the use of geothermal heat and well water.
